What did this financier from a small, impoverished country do to deserve the world’s most prestigious award? He invented microcredit, the practice of lending tiny amounts of money to the poor.

It was a revolutionary idea. Until then, bankers figured that such borrowers were worthy of neither credit nor trust. Along came Dr. Yunus, who demonstrated that lending to the needy could be a profitable business and transform their lives. Indeed, many of Grameen’s clients used these small sums to start small businesses and to escape the clutches of poverty.

But you probably know this already. Over the years, Dr. Yunus has been embraced by rock stars like Bono and Peter Gabriel, and last year was recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama. He has also been honored by major corporations eager to have their brands associated with the anti-poverty work of Grameen, which shared the Nobel with its charismatic founder.

What is Dr. Yunus doing with all the good will he has accrued? He has another initiative, one that is even more ambitious than microcredit. In “Building Social Business: The New Kind of Capitalism That Serves Humanity’s Most Pressing Needs” (PublicAffairs, $25.95), he calls for creation of an alternative economy of businesses devoted to helping the underprivileged.

The way he envisions it, these companies would be run as efficiently as the for-profit variety. Unlike charities, they would make enough money to be self-sustaining. However, they would invest leftover money in expanding their humanitarian efforts rather than paying dividends to shareholders.

People “will be delighted to create businesses for selfless purposes,” Dr. Yunus predicts. “The only thing we’ll have to do is to free them from the mind-set that puts profit-making at the heart of every business, an idea that we imposed on them through our flawed economic theory.”

He even foresees the day when social businesses will be public companies whose shares are traded on their own stock market. This, he believes, will help pave the way for the elimination of poverty in our lifetimes.

In many ways, “Building Social Business” is best appreciated as a sequel to Dr. Yunus’s 2007 book, “Creating a World Without Poverty: Social Business and the Future of Capitalism,” in which he first presented his theory of a new economy. The difference is that the author now declares that social business is no longer a dream. Three years later, Grameen has created social business ventures with corporations including Intel, Adidas, BASF and Danone, maker of Dannon yogurt.

“In just a few short years, social business has developed from a mere idea to a living, rapidly growing, reality,” Dr. Yunus says. “It is already bringing improvements into the lives of many people and is now on the verge of exploding into one of the world’s most important social and economic trends.”

Well, maybe. The trouble is that many of Grameen’s partnerships are still in their infancy. And the two more mature projects that he showcases have yet to break even, including Grameen Danone, an effort to provide poor Bangladeshi with low-cost, nutritional yogurt. I mention it because he included it in his last book as one to watch.

To be fair, Dr. Yunus expects the yogurt business to break even this year. But he’s not making any promises. No wonder the chapter on Grameen Danone is entitled “Growing Pains.”

None of this has dampened this global celebrity’s enthusiasm for his cause. He urges readers to join his crusade. “You don’t need to know ‘how to do business,’ ” he writes a bit too facilely. “Much more important is your desire to solve a social problem. To be sure, practical knowledge about doing business will be useful. If you do not have experience, you can learn as you go along — hopefully with a mentor, an investor, or a partner to challenge and support you.”

Yes, but won’t this be expensive? “Obtaining financing is probably one of the biggest hurdles you will have to face on the road to launching and running a successful social business,” Dr. Yunus says. “But with some creativity, resourcefulness, and a lot of patience, you should be able to achieve your goals.”

That’s easy for a Nobel laureate to say. He has so many big corporations calling him about creating social businesses that he can name the terms. It’s hard to imagine any neophyte social entrepreneur being so lucky.

It’s hard to fault Dr. Yunus’ intentions and his optimism. Those things have already taken him awfully far. But it’s a bit premature for him to assert that his social business movement is on the verge of reshaping the world economy.

He has a lot more work to do first. Then again, he probably encountered a bit of skepticism when he first floated the idea for microcredit, too.

Black Participation Falls Again in MLB

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A new report shows Major League Baseball equaled its best grades for racial and gender diversity hiring, even as the percentage of black players dropped again last year.
MLB received an "A" for race and a "B" for gender hiring in the annual study Wednesday by the University of Central Florida's Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports. The status quo no longer exists in many of the top MBA programs.

A recent New York Times article highlights the emphasis on social entrepreneurs and explains their importance to today's economy.

Additionally, major MBA programs and foundations are sponsoring more and more business plan competitions to help aspiring entrepreneurs get off the ground.

CnXn will be entering several of these competitions with the hopes of gaining more seed funding to help us grow.

What It Means To Be A College Baseball Player

Below is a blog I wrote my senior year at Oberlin College about what it means to be a college baseball player......

As a senior co-Captain of this years baseball team the light at the end of the tunnel is nearing for my baseball career. I have accepted the fact that Major League Baseball is probably not in the cards (Although i was convinced that I would make it until I was about sixteen). I have played the game of baseball since I could walk. I started with games in the front yard with my Dad. I was fortunate enough to be able to play lots of baseball between then and now. I sit here now as a senior in shock that it all must come to and end soon. I would like to offer you some insight about what it means to play baseball and compete at the collegiate level.

I entered this last year of collegiate baseball with the mindset of trying to enjoy every second; the good and the bad. Baseball is a funny game. It is the only game where one can fail seven out of ten times and still be considered great. The game of baseball has offered me more than just the pure excitement of competing on the field for nine innings. Baseball has been a metaphor for life. Baseball is not only about balls and strikes or winning and losing. Baseball teaches one how to be a man. The game is a test. I have learned more from baseball than anything else I have experienced in my life. The game has made me tough, humble, and grateful. Baseball has taught me to never give up. It has prepared me more than anything for the real world.

Many people wonder why we do what we do? What makes the hours of work worth it? What does it mean to be a Division III collegiate baseball player? Athletics at the Division III level are not about taking your game to the professional level. As a collegiate athlete at a demanding academic institution one has to ask himself why he sacrifices hours upon hours practicing and playing. What is the reward for a Division III baseball player?

It is hard to explain this to a non-participant because there is no real glory, no big crowds, and no million dollar contract in sight. For me, the answer is quite simple. "For the love of the game." You have to love it to do what we do on a daily basis.

At the conclusion of this season I might never put a uniform on my back again. I surely won't ever wear the Oberlin College number two jersey again. What gives me solace is the fact that nobody can ever take away my passion and love for the game. Doug Glanville (a former Major League outfielder and NY Times contributor) wrote about the "badge of honor" that every ballplayer wears on his sleeve. That "badge of honor" is why my teammates and I work so hard and dedicate ourselves to the game. I will exit the ball field at the end of this season knowing that I will always have that "badge of honor" from the exclusive fraternity of college baseball and the game of baseball itself.

Addressing Some Confusion About CnXn And Re-Affirming Our Mission

Mike and I wanted to address some confusion about CnXn, and also re-affirm our mission and purpose. The last few weeks we have received numerous inquiries about whether we are somehow connected to another apparel idea, IOwn. THE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION IS NO. We found it somewhat ironic that IOwn information started to pop up all over Facebook just weeks after we began to promote the CnXn initiative. We wish IOwn the best of luck, but we felt like it was necessary to make it known that we are not connected with them at all.

The idea for CnXn originated seven months ago when Mike Eppich and I graduated from Oberlin College and Rollins College. With a very unforgiving job market, we both decided to come up with an idea that would allow us to pursue our passions, those being baseball/athletics and working with kids.

Since the end of May, Mike and I have spent a minimum of 40 hours per week working on CnXn. By the way, we both have full-time jobs now too. I teach 7th grade at a charter school in inner-city Cleveland and Mike recently got a job as a sales associate with Unifirst, a uniform provider for corporate clients and professional organizations. After work, we both spend late nights bringing the CnXn idea together.

We have written a full 40 page comprehensive business plan (available upon request). Additionally, we have legally filed to become an LLC and are waiting to get our vendors license approved. We have talked to manufacturers across the globe, and have received 4 samples to date.

Our mission is to "connect people from all socioeconomic backgrounds." CnXn is not just your typical apparel company. The CnXn brand sends a message. Our goal is to become sustainable and take a percentage of our sales and donate money and equipment to inner-city schools and athletic departments, beginning in Cleveland.

Lastly, we wanted to announce that we will no longer be posting CnXn all over Facebook. Please refer to the CnXn Facebook Fan Page and our wesbite www.cnxnapparel.com for the latest news. Additionally, we would like to set up a listserv to send our supporters weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly updates of our progress until we officially launch. Please email fans@cnxnapparel.com with your name and contact information and we will add you to our e-mail list.

We are also working on writing the code for our new website and we will have a much easier mailing list form available once the site is up.

Thank you very much for your support.

Brian and Mike

Bootstrapping 101: Brand It Creatively

Madsoul

Founded by Marc D'Amelio with $1,000

In launching Madsoul, an urban streetwear label, in 2000, Marc D'Amelio raised guerrilla marketing to an art form. Take, for example, his sticker campaign. D'Amelio figured out that if he signed up for a United Parcel Service account, he was entitled to an unlimited supply of blank UPS labels. If he bought a Tektronix printer, he was entitled to free black ink. So he signed on with both companies and began printing stickers by the thousands and distributing them at concerts and art festivals around New York City, where Madsoul is based. "If you can't afford to do a $100,000 billboard, and you can't even afford to do a $20,000 print advertisement, you gotta figure out other ways," he says.

D'Amelio also promoted Madsoul through mix tapes of hip-hop music, on the theory that pretty much everybody will take a free album. He discovered that record labels would usually give him the rights to unreleased tracks for free (they saw it as easy publicity), as long as he agreed to mix well-known rappers and brand-new artists on the same album. Between songs, D'Amelio would have the artists record promos like, "Don't forget to check Madsoul out." "It's a great way to convey your brand message," he says. "Ten little commercials to tell people where to buy the product." The cost to him was $1 per tape.

Scoring His First Sale

The Target
The first customer Marc D'Amelio went after was a big one: the New York Knicks. He knew a buyer at the team from his previous job as a clothing sales rep.

The Setup
D'Amelio asked a screen printer to create sample T-shirts for him for free. In return, he promised the company the contract if he closed the deal.

The Sale
The Knicks' buyer loved the shirts, and ordered 3,000 to sell at Madison Square Garden for a total of $30,000.

The Terms
D'Amelio returned to the screen printer and offered to pay $15,000 for the run, but only after the Knicks paid him. The vendor agreed.

The Lesson
As Madsoul grew, D'Amelio continued to emphasize its tiny size when trying to collect from customers. "You don't pay us, people don't get paid," he told them.

Decent Exposure

D'Amelio traded clothes for some advertising in a small hip-hop magazine. With other magazines, he says he was always willing to talk to advertising sales reps, but he pushed to get the line coverage in the editorial pages before agreeing to advertise.

Design Within Reach

The graffiti artists who did Madsoul's graphics weren't used to getting paid for their art. So they were thrilled when D'Amelio offered them a choice of a 10 percent royalty on each T-shirt sold or a flat fee up to $500.

<a Children's Zone

For years, educators have tried and failed to get poor kids from the inner city to do just as well in school as kids from America's more affluent suburbs. Black kids still routinely score well below white kids on national standardized tests.

But a man named Geoffrey Canada may have figured out a way to close that racial achievement gap. What he's doing has been called one of the most ambitious social experiments to alleviate poverty of our lifetime. His laboratory is a 97-block neighborhood in Harlem, which he has flooded with a wide array of social, medical and educational services available for free to the 10,000 children who live there. It is called the "Harlem Children's Zone."

Canada has his own Charter School serving 1200 kids in grades K-8. There is 1 adult for every 6 students, as well as an emphasis on discipline and strict dress code. Canada does not believe he has succeeded until all of his students attend college. He is trying to "level the playing field with kids in Harlem and kids in middle class communities."

The Harlem Children's Zone has experienced great success. CnXn looks to follow the Harlem Children's Zone model in many respects.

Watch CBS News Videos Online

Congratulations to Cleveland's Glenville High School Football Team

If you follow Cleveland High School Football then you have probably heard of the fantastic run made this year by the Glenville Tarblooders. During the last few weeks, I have spent many of my afternoons after school playing catch with one of my students named Kenny.

Kenny has a phenomenal arm. The ball just flies out of his hand. I have been showing him some simple drills to improve his throwing mechanics.

Many of the other students in the school have learned that I played college baseball and that I have been working with Kenny. I now have kids come up to me everyday asking to play.

The black community is full of potential when it comes to baseball. Young children like Kenny have all the talent in the world but just need some coaching and structure to help refine their game. Unfortunately, baseball participation is at an all-time low in the black community. Only 8.5% of Major League Baseball players are black.

Mookie Wilson, former New York Met, on baseball in the black community: "Rekindling the passion for the game, especially within the black community, will eventually help boost the sagging numbers." He continued, "It has something to do with how the game is being marketed in our communities. But the bigger problem might be with young people just losing interest. What you need to do is help the youth establish a relationship with baseball."

CnXn will work to promote the game in the black community. Michael and I want to share our rich baseball background with children who otherwise would not be involved with the game.

Stay tuned to hear more about Kenny and my other students as they pursue their interest in baseball.

Devonta Crawford's Dream

I am currently a 7th grade teacher at Hope Academy Cathedral Charter School in Cleveland. We are a new online sports apparel retailer based in Cleveland, Ohio. The name CnXn is short for Connection. CnXn will offer our target audiences a multifunctional, high performance active wear product.

“NPD defines sports apparel as ‘clothing designed for, or that could be used in, active sports’” (The 2006 Sporting Goods Market Research Handbook).

In the preliminary stages of production, we will offer t-shirts, performance wear, shorts, headbands, and other accessories. CnXn will run auxiliary operations in select cities. We will begin in our hometown, Cleveland, Ohio. Each subsidiary will be represented by a logo of the cities' respective area code. For example, in Cleveland we have created a 216 logo. We like to call it the "216 Connection."

The goal of CnXn is to bring people together from all different socioeconomic backgrounds, hence the name CnXn. We have created a multi-layered shared element in which the potential customer will align with our causes while simultaneously sharing their hometown pride with the area code logos.

CnXn will promote education and push for increased athletic participation (notably baseball) in underserved areas. As a part of our operation, CnXn will donate a percentage of sales (either in the form of money or equipment) to inner-city athletic departments so their student athletes are able to have a more positive high school athletic experience.

Brian in the Oberlin Alumni Magazine

Out of the Park, Ballplayers a Hit
in Classrooms

by Michael Steiner ’09

It was Brian Verne, a May graduate and co-captain of Oberlin’s baseball team, who first had the idea of getting his teammates involved in the community.

So at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year, Verne met with the principal of Prospect Elementary. What became of their meeting was a program in which nine members of the Oberlin baseball team went into three fifth-grade classrooms four days a week to help students with their academic work.

"Athletes are looked up to by young kids," Verne says, "even Division III athletes. So we were automatically role models while we were there. After a week or two, it got to the point where the kids actually looked forward to us coming, and thus looked forward to doing their work. I worked with one girl who, at first, seemed like she had no desire to learn. After a few weeks she became more comfortable, and was completing assignments in less than an hour. It was very gratifying for both of us."

"It’s always important to give back to the community in whatever way possible," Verne says.

Go Buckeyes!

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v4.nonxt3.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D02d8b27ace9ae7d6%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330301507%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D6CB1AA28FD11324A56023993611A1E06B7409394.494609DDD8CF8E2CE0244E5059C21AC44263C37D%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D2d8b27ace9ae7d6%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3D_aMJgqGdZ0fCpa_5RsYnISA01gw&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Cleveland Startup Weekend on Channel 3 News

CnXn attended the Cleveland Startup Weekend lastnight.
